The Importance of an Alkaline Diet

Eating an excess of acid-forming foods, such as sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, dairy products and alcohol, can lead to ailments such as poor digestion, constipation or diarrhea, gout, osteoarthritis, leg cramps, bad skin, eczema, and even hypertension and heart disease.

Your risk of developing cancer is also greater because cancer loves acidic conditions. These acidic foods also lower the oxygen levels in the body which prevents proper cellular metabolism taking place and leads to a serious lack of energy. Too much acid also has a negative effect on the immune system and can lead to bacterial, yeast and fungi infections.

A highly acidic body also robs the body of very necessary minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. A shortage of these minerals can result in a loss of muscle mass and a deterioration of healthy bones and teeth. Click To Tweet

This condition is also known as acidosis and can be a devastating threat to your health.

What Causes Acidosis?

Today’s hectic lifestyle often leads to folks eating on the run to save time, and on-the-run eating mostly consists of snack-type fast foods, which can result in acid indigestion. The liver struggles to metabolize all the extra acid flooding in, and what it cannot handle, is then deposited in the fat cells, which raises the risk of life-threatening ailments such as heart disease and cancer.

Drugs are promoted to heal the body, but certain medications also add to the acidic environment and may affect your body’s ability to fully absorb minerals and nutrients. Besides the active ingredients, many medications contain two highly acid-forming substances, caffeine and the artificial sweetener – aspartame. Although drugs may be designed to heal, what they also do is create a further imbalance of your acid/alkaline levels.

What Can You Do to Increase Your Alkalinity?

The remedy lies in the food you eat. Switching to a more alkaline diet can minimize your risk of disease. There are many alkaline foods available such as fruits, vegetables, root crops, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, green tea and even lean proteins.

Here are 5 of the top alkaline forming foods to consider:

  • Root veggies such as radishes, beets, carrots and turnips
  • Garlic, a true miracle food that also promotes overall health
  • Cayenne is amongst the most alkalizing foods because it is high in vitamin A and has antibacterial properties
  • Lemons are possibly the most alkalizing of all, and provide potent and immediate relief for hyperacidity, and virus-related conditions. Lemons also re-energize the liver and help with acidic detox
  • Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are also excellent alkalizing agents

An easy way to remember is that most fruits and veggies are alkaline forming and almost everything else is acid-forming. Note that citrus fruits, in spite of the fact that they taste acidic, are highly alkaline-forming, due to the alkaline minerals present in them.

Every disease known to man, every skin ailment, and every septic wound, needs an acid environment in which to flourish. Paying attention to your alkaline levels will lower your risk of falling prey to serious illnesses.

Focusing on an alkaline diet will certainly help to restore important minerals like calcium and magnesium, which have been lost because of too much acid. This will be of benefit to your whole system, especially vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, and especially the heart which is the most alkaline organ in the body.

Another bonus is that your digestive system will function better than ever before. Acid indigestion, unpleasant reflux, and painful heartburn, will be dealt a killing blow when your body acid/alkaline levels are correct. A healthy blood pH level is around 7.35 to 7.45.

The Best Options for Alkalizing Your Body

The best way to improve and maintain healthy alkalinity levels is to make an alkaline-rich diet a permanent part of your lifestyle. You can also boost your alkalizing efforts by replacing your normal drinking water with high pH (around 8) alkaline water, which will help flush toxins from the body. Tap water contains a certain amount of acid and other impurities beyond your control.

You need to drink water every single day, so a simple change to alkaline water can really be a big help as you try to alkalize. You can purchase alkaline water from almost any grocery store, or if it is possible, purchase your own filter machine which converts tap water into pure alkaline water.
